C J Pryor were invited to tender for an outsourced Quarry operation by Cemex Latvia

C J Pryor (Contracts) Limited were invited by Cemex (Latvia) to visit their operations within Latvia and carry out a study on two existing quarrying operations being undertaken by Cemex LV

The two quarries studied by C J Pryor were being exploited for the supply of raw materials to feed the Broceni Cement plant, which was a wet mix operation and the plant, due to its age was nearing the end of its productive life.

Cemex LV were well advanced with the construction of their new dry mix process cement plant at Broceni, which would help reduce the operational costs for Cemex LV, and increase production to 1,600,00 tonnes per year for future demands in Eastern Europe and the Baltic States.

The new Broceni plant is now in producing clinker at a rate of approximately 1,600,000 tonnes per year.

C J Pryor completed all evaluations of the limestone and clay quarries and were successful in tendering for the outsourced works as follows:

• Annual Overburden excavation 1 million m³

• Limestone excavation 1.6million tonnes

• Limestone processing 1.6million tonnes

• Limestone loading 1.6million tonnes

• Vegetation clearance and shredding

• Haul road maintenance

• C J Pryor also has works to come on stream in 2010 and the Broceni clay quarry for:

• Overburden removal

• Haul road construction and maintenance

• Clay excavation

To ensure C J Pryor fully meet their customers requirements for these important operations ‘Pryor Contracts Latvia SIA’ was formed as a stand alone operation to offer customers in Latvia, the Baltic regions and Eastern Europe the full support for all of our equipment and employees involved in these operations.

Pryor Contracts Latvia SIA has been able to employ some local operators for these operations and these employees have been receiving Health and Safety and operator training to ensure they meet and maintain the high standards required by the Pryor Group and its valued customers.

Pryor Contracts Latvia SIA are currently undertaking overburden removal and limestone production works in the Saldus region of Latvia and we are now coming up once again to very testing times for men and machines as was experienced last winter in this region when temperatures in the quarry dropped well below -30º. These temperatures alone create their own issues for our men and machines on this project, but morale remains high and our site manager refers to these conditions as ‘character building’.

The UK arm of the Pryor Group provide full back up to Pryor Contracts Latvia SIA and we have been fortunate to have formed excellent relationships with many local suppliers in the Saldus region and also via the major equipment suppliers
